The Art of Bookcase Styling

Creating the perfect #shelfie Vignette Styling

Styling a bookcase is an art in and upon itself.

To the untrained eye it may look like odds and ends are randomly thrown together. But if one was to look a little closer there’s actually careful planning and implementation amidst the chic styling.

Monochrome interior watch styling

First one must pick a style/theme/aesthetic, I of course choose Monochrome but there are numerous other possibilities limited only to your imagination.Other such styles include Nautical and Scandinavian .But whichever approach you take the same rules always apply.

Here are my Top 6 tips

1.Choose your style and stick with it!

  • Be sure of your base theme from the get go as there is nothing worse than seeing pieces that don’t fit together and a mishmash of styles that don’t work together.

2.Bookshelves are not just for books! Duh…

  • They are also a fabulous way to display your handbags and shoes.Same goes for your accessories and other decorative items.”But Natalia I don’t have designer items to display in my bookcase” you might say..You don’t need designer pieces to create eye catching setups my loves!
  • Display that Panama hat you got on your trip to the Bahamas or those cool boots you bought at H&M.
  • Also show off your favorite fashion items, they don’t have to have a big price tag to pack a power punch.

•ProTip•

Keep your designer boxes and paper shopping bags from your purchases for your display.

3.Arrange books and magazines by color

  • This is very important, don’t underestimate the dramatic impact this has.I keep all my magazines with white spines just for this purpose.
  • Colored books/magazines can be used with other styles aswell, arranged in groups to create a unique color pop.

4.Create shapes and lines.

  • If you’re a photographer then use that knowledge to help you style.
  • Composition and leading lines our your ticket here.
  • Add layering, different heights and it should say something about you.
  • Do you love fashion? Or cars, the beach? Incorporate those into your shelf. This is the place to incorporate those exotic trinkets you brought back from far flung places.
  • Add whatever items you want as it’s your bookcase and should reflect you!

5.Choose your Type of bookshelf

  • What’s your theme? If it’s monochrome you could paint your bookshelf white for a nice contrast against your items.
  • If you’re going for Hollywood regency then an open geometric brass bookshelf would be optimal rather than a Hamptons style bookcase for a coastal feel.

6.Final Edit

  • Don’t be afraid to step back and reevaluate it’s all about getting the right ratios.Walking away from a job and coming back provides a fresh perspective when you are stuck.

Fashion is supposed to be fun likewise can be said for interior styling.Last but not least have fun with it!

  1. As I’ve just moved into a new apartment and am thinking of how to style this and that this was a lovely read as I think people often underestimate the many areas in which bookshelves can be used. I have all kinds of weird stuff in my shelf and only keep some books with pretty covers in it as it’s part of the interior decoration rather than a place to store books. I keep the ugly books hidden behind doors, haha. 🙂 And yes, fashion has a place on my shelf too!

  8. All of this is goals af.
I recently did a DIY project and made all my white shelves marble but they are still empty as I am trying to figure out how to style them.

  9. I adored this when I saw it on Instagram! This is something that I so enjoy doing. Unfortunately having a book shelf with anything on it is unrealistic for this season of my life. I have two little ones and I know my touchy toddler would not leave it alone! Hopefully by this time next year I can look back on your post for some design inspiration! You did a magnificent job!

  19. I absolutely adore this entire post! I agree with you that there should be a theme and items should be carefully thought out. I love the idea , for example, of using a Panama hat from a vacation. I love walking into homes where you can learn about the ordinary by looking at their bookshelves. I totally agree that they are not just for books! I love how you combine decorative pieces with accessories!!

  20. This is by far the best inspiration I’ve seen today. Creativity at it’s best. I have to literally copy some of this into my home

  21. Oh, really interesting! But do you actually use those items or they just sit there as “decoration”. I lack of space and shelf for me need to be useful for organizing, storing and keeping my house in order. I don’t think I’ll ever have a shelf just to look at it.

    • melbourneyum

It’s not just a shelf to “look at” as you can see I use it to house my shoes, accessories, bags.
And of course I wear those items.
It also stores my books and magazines which organizes them.Like any well styled bookshelf it’s a mix of decoration and pieces from your home either it be books or items from your closet.
Think of it as a display for your most favorite pieces from your wardrobe.
Which in turn makes them easy to find when your getting dressed.

    • melbourneyum

      Thanks Debbie
      I would love too x

Oh wow that’s lovely to have a partner that takes interest in design. Thanks! when ever I feel like re freshing my space I just re organize the shelves for a whole new look.

  22. What a clever idea to style your bookcase! I never thought of this and I always thought bookcases were for books, but this really proves me wrong. I love how professional your bookcase looks. I’m going to utilize your tips, thank you!
